Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is an internationally reputed institution of learning, situated in the holy city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This creative and innovative University was founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, the great nationalist leader in 1916 with cooperation of great personalities like Dr. Annie Besant, who viewed it as the University of India.

The University has several institutes, colleges and schools of learning, and provides a wide range of courses in huminities, sciences and technologies etc. The Institute of Medical Sciences is one of the institute of the Banaras Hindu University, which imparts to Medical Education. The institute offers a wide arrange of courses and conducts All India Entrance Examination for admission towards these courses.

The Institute of Medical Sciences - Banaras Hindu University offers the following courses :

1. MBBS – Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery 5½ years duration (including one year compulsory rotating internship training)
2. Postgraduate Courses : M.D./M.S. (Doctor of Medicine/Master of Surgery)
3. Post-Doctoral Courses : DM/MCh

1. BAMS – Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery 5 ½ years duration (including one year compulsory rotating internship training)
2. Postgraduate Courses : MD(Ay)/MS(Ay) -3 years duration

1. Introductory course in Ayurveda - Two months
2. Certificate course in Ayurveda - One Academic year

The institute also offers research facilities for the award of Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees in various subjects and research facilities for Ph.D. Scholars in the field of Basic and Life Sciences.

The eligibility criteria for taking entrance test of MBBS and BDS courses of IMS-BHU is as follows :

Qualification: Passed Intermediate Science/Pre-Medical Course/12 year of 10+2 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 50% marks (40% in case of SC/ST candidates) in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together. Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination may also apply.

Age : Completed 17 years but not crossed 25 years as on 31st December of the year of admission.

Note : Foreign nationals are not required to appear in the entrance examination for MBBS Course. They may seek admission through respective Ministries of Govt. of India, New Delhi, as per the rules laid down for the purpose.

The eligibility criteria for taking entrance test for MD/MS courses of IMS-BHU is as follows:

Candidates who have passed MBBS course recognized by the Medical Council of India and completed one year internship training are eligible to appear in the entrance examination. Those candidates who have already done or doing MD/MS course are not eligible.

The eligibility criteria for taking entrance test for MD/MS(Ayurveda) courses of IMS-BHU is as follows:

Candidates who have passed BAMS coursed recognized by CCIM and completed six months House Job (in the case of 5 years BAMS Course) or one year House Job (in the case of 4 ½ years BAMS Course) are eligible to appear in the entrance examination. Candidates who have passed MBBS course recognized by Medical Council of India and have completed one year internship training are also eligible to appear in the entrance examination for admission under supernumerary category. The eligibility criteria for taking entrance test for D.M./M.Ch. courses of IMS-BHU is as follows:

Admission to DM/MCh courses are made through an All India Competitive Entrance Examination conducted by the University. Candidates who have passed the MD/MS examination are eligible to appear in the entrance examination.

Entrance Test Admission forms for admission to various courses are issued by the office of the Controller of Examinations of BHU every year. And can be obtained on payment after Notification of the University.

The IMS-BHU, Varanasi conducts All India Entrance Examination for admission to different under graduate and post graduate courses. Admissions are done according to merit in the Entrance Tests, subject to fulfilling of eligibility requirements.
