Post Graduate Programmes Entrance Examination
Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore conducts an All India Entrance Examination for admission into post graduate courses every year.
The post graduate programmes in medicine and surgery offered by Christian Medical College and Hospital are ‘in-service’ type.
Eligibility
Degree of Doctor of Medicine (D.M.) Higher Specialities
A candidate can be considered for admission to the above courses if he/she has passed M.D. General Medicine or M.D. Paediatric Medicine of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, or any other University recognised by it and the Medical Council of India.
- For D.M. Clinical Haematology, M.D. Pathology candidates are also eligible to apply.
- For DNB Endocrinology - candidates with MD General Medicine or Paediatrics or Obstetrics and Gynaecology are eligible to apply.
Degree of Master of Chirurgy (M.Ch.) Higher Specialities
A candidate can be considered for admission to the above courses if he / she has passed the M.S. in General Surgery of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, or any other University, recognised by it and the Medical Council of India.
- For M.Ch. Paediatric surgery, candidates with MS Orthopaedics may also apply
- For MCh Urology, M.D. in Ob. & Gy. is also acceptable
- For MCh Plastic Surgery, candidates with MS ENT or Orthopaedics may also apply
- For the 3 year MCh in Neurosurgery an M.S. Orthopaedics or ENT is also acceptable.
Candidates with MNAMS / MAMS / DIP.N.B. qualification conducted by the National Board of Examinations have to possess an additional year of research experience after obtaining their degree to be eligible to apply for Higher Speciality courses.
MD / MS / 5 year M.Ch. Neurosurgery course / Diplomas / Dip.N.B. (Family Medicine)
Candidates having qualified for the M.B.B.S Degree of Madras University or any other University recognised as equivalent by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University and the Indian Medical Council and obtained full registration and having completed their compulsory rotating residential internship before the starting date of the courses, are eligible to apply for the postgraduate diploma and degree courses.
Candidates having qualified for a postgraduate diploma may also apply for the postgraduate degree (MS/MD) course in the same subject. Post Diploma candidates with a diploma in the same subject will undergo 2 years training for the degree.
Those applying for Dip.N.B. (Family Medicine) may be required to have cleared the primary examination of the NBE to be eligible for admission.
Candidates who are currently doing a PG degree may not be considered for admission to the 5yr MCh in Neuro-Surgery.
Examination Pattern
Entrance test examination (written test, practical and interviews) is conducted by CMC Vellore for selection of candidates for post graduate courses in medicine and surgery.
Entrance written test for selection to the Diploma and MD / MS level courses is of 2 types:
A GENERAL paper consisting of multiple choice questions drawn from all subjects taught in the undergraduate medical course.
A SPECIAL paper consisting of multiple choice questions in the speciality for which candidate has applied and subjects allied to it e.g., the paper for E.N.T. may include questions in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc., with respect to the ear, nose and throat.
The written test for selection to the Higher Speciality courses is a special paper as described above.
For those taking the examination for the MD / MS / Diploma courses, the duration of the General and Special papers are 3 hours each containing 240 questions.
The examination for the higher specialties paper is of 1 ˝ hours duration containing 120 questions and 3 hours duration containing 240 questions for MCh Neurosurgery (5yr).

Examination Centres
Entrance test centres for admission into post graduate courses of Christian Medical College and Hospital are
Vellore, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi.
Note : Those who cannot take the examination on a Saturday for religious reasons (e.g. SDAs) should apply separately to the Registrar for special arrangements to take the examinations.
This special arrangement however will only be available at the Vellore centre.
A candidate may write a general paper for all his/her choices (a maximum of 4 courses in 2 subjects)
OR
They may write a General paper for selection to a course in one subject and write a Special paper for selection to a course in another subject applied for.
Candidates are not permitted to write two Special papers.
Candidates applying for the MD / MS / Diploma courses are not permitted to write the General paper and also a special paper for selection to the same specialty.
Candidates with MBBS can apply for a maximum of 4 courses in 2 subjects only for the PG session and on a separate form for MCh (5yr) Neurosurgery. Candidates with an MD/MS or equivalent degree can apply for only one Higher Speciality course.
Registration
Procedure for Registering with Tamil Nadu Medical Council
Before a candidate can be accepted for the post graduate training programme at Christian Medical College & Hospital Vellore, he/she is required to register with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council.
The application for registration with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council (T.N.M.C.) must be submitted in the prescribed form along with the registration fee and the following:
- M.B.B.S. Degree certificate in original and a Photostat copy.
- Internship completion certificate in original and a Photostat copy.
- Date of Birth evidence certificate in original and a Photostat copy.
- Previous Medical Council Registration Certificate in original and a Photostat copy.
- A No Objection Certificate from the State Medical Council in the case of candidates registered with medical council other than the T.N.M.C., in original and a Photostat copy.
- Three passport size and Three Stamp size photographs.
The only Certificate of Date of Birth approved by the T.N.M.C. is the front page of the S.S.L.C. booklet or an equivalent completion of school education certificate issued by the appropriate authority of a national or regional Education Board or Council (H.S.C., S.S.C., I.S.C., C.B.S.E., etc.) which bears details of the date of birth and identity of the candidate.
After submission of the above, it may take 1 week for the T.N.M.C. Registration Certificate to be issued.

Stipend & Accommodation
The postgraduate courses in Medicine and Surgery are conducted in accordance with the regulations of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University and the training is of an “in service” type.
Selected candidates will be paid a consolidated stipend as per rules, and provided free partly furnished single accommodation.
