Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD), Department of Education (DAE), Government of India.

CEED is the qualifying examination for admission to Post Graduate M.Des. (i.e. Master of Design) programmes at the Industrial Design Centre (IIT Bombay), Inter disciplinary Industrial Design Programme (IIT Delhi), Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (IISc Bangalore) and Design Programme (IIT Kanpur). However, IIT Kanpur and IISc Bangalore also consider GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score for admission into design programmes. The examination tests the candidates for visual perception ability, drawing skills, design aptitude and communication skills.

CEED / GATE qualification alone does not guarantee admission to design programmes offered at IITs or IISc. Candidates also have to fulfill other requirements such as tests & interviews of the respective institutions (i.e. IIT or IISc) for admission.

Eligibility

Eligibility criteria for admission into different post graduate designing programmes at IITs and IISc.

A candidate must have completed 10+2+4 years of study or higher.

But different institutes have different criteria for admission, which is given below in brief.

Educational qualification For M.Des. in Product Design and Engineering at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Design or Architecture.

Educational qualification for M.Des. in Industrial Design at IDC, lIT Bombay

Minimum 55% of marks are required in any of the following areas.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent in any branch
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Design equivalent to RTech.
  • Interior Design Professional Diploma of CEPT (5 year programme)
  • Interior Design Degree (4 years) / Diploma (5 years) programme after 10+2
  • Professional Diploma of NID

    • Educational qualification for M.Des. in Visual Communication at IDC, IIT Bombay

    Minimum 55% of marks are required in any of the following areas.

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent in any branch
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or equivalent
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Design equivalent to RTech.
    • Interior Design Professional Diploma of CEPT (5 year programme)
    • Interior Design Degree (4 years) / Diploma (5 years) programme after 10+2
    • Professional Diploma of NID
    • BFA (professional course in Applied Art/ Fine Art)
    • GD Art (5 year professional programme)

    Educational Qualification for M.Des. in Inter disciplinary Industrial Design Programme, IIT Delhi

    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Engineering (any branch) or Architecture

    Educational Qualification for M.Des. in Design Programme in IIT Kanpur

    Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Design or Architecture.

    There is no age limit and candidates can take Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) any number of times.

    A fixed number of assistantships, based on merit, are available to pursue the programmes. Other candidates, if granted admission, will have to organise for finance / sponsorships on their own.


    Test Pattern

    Pattern of CEED examination / Structure of CEED Examination

    CEED examination tests drawing skills, aesthetic sensibility, creativity, problem identification and approach to visual and mechanical design.

    The examination also tests visualization, creativity, design and general awareness, and comprehension.

Eligibility:

Eligibility for applying to the Master of Design programme : Product Design at IDC

Valid CEED Score

Bachelor's Degree/Diploma or equivalent Degree/Diploma in Engineering, Architecture, Design, Interior Design, Professional Diploma of NID, Professional Diploma of CEPT (5 year program) with a minimum 55% marks or equivalent grades (50% in case of SC/ST) OR more than 45% marks (40% in case of SC/ST) in the above disciplines with 85 percentile at CEED (80 percentile for SC/ST) and two years relevant experience with exceptionally outstanding portfolio.

Visual Communication, Animation and Interaction Design at IDC

Valid CEED Score

Bachelor's Degree/Diploma or equivalent Degree/Diploma in Engineering, Architecture, Design, Interior Design, Professional Diploma of NID, Professional Diploma of CEPT (5 year program), BFA - Professional course in Applied Arts/Fine Arts, GD Arts (5 year professional course ) with minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades (50% in case of SC/ST) OR more than 45% marks (40% in case of SC/ST) in the above disciplines with 85 percentile at CEED (80 percentile for SC/ST) and two years relevant experience with exceptionally outstanding portfolio.

OR Masters Degree in Arts / Science / Computer Applications with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST) and good potentials and aptitude for arts and design.

Candidates having 5-year GD Art Degree / Diploma after 10th standard may be considered for admission with one year experience in the relevant area of study.

M.Des Programme for foreign Nationals:

Must have a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades (5.5/10.0 or 2.2/4.0) at Bachelor's Degree/Diploma or Professional courses / Diploma (Minimum 5-year duration) in engineering / Architecture / Design / Fine Arts

Valid TOEFL score (for candidates from non-English speaking countries)

Outstanding portfolio (which will be evaluated by PGC of IDC, IIT Bombay

Application procedure:

Cost of Application form is Rs. 300/ for General category (GN), Physically Challenged (PC) & Other Backward Class (OBC) and Rs. 150/ for SC / ST candidates. The cost of application form is to be paid only in the form of Demand Draft drawn in favour of `REGISTRAR, IIT BOMBAY'.

The details of Demand Draft are to be written in the application form.

The application without Demand Draft will not be considered.

Application Form & Information Brochure is available at the Academic Office, 2nd Floor, Main Building, IIT Powai, Mumbai400 076 and can be collected in person against D.D. Only.

b) The brochure and application forms may also be obtained by sending a Demand Draft to Deputy Registrar (Academic), IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai – 400 076.

c) Application form & Brochure are available on IIT website. Candidates can download the application and filled up form be submitted (at counter / by post) alongwith Demand Draft. Forms without Demand Draft will not be entertained.

d) Candidates can submit the form online. However, he/she has to send printed adequate number of sets of application form duly signed considering number of Departments applied for and a Demand Draft to the Deputy Registrar (Academic), IIT Bombay,Powai,Mumbai – 400 076 before last date for submission of application forms, failing which, his / her candidature will not be considered.
