Joint Entrance Examination –JEE is one of the most popular and important entrance examination for the Engineering, Technology, Design, Architecture & Planning, Pharmacy and basic sciences streams in India. In the year 2006 nearly 3 Lacs students have taken part in this examination from all over the country.

The admission to the Undergraduate Programmes for Indian and Foreign nationals at Indian Institute of Technology -IIT’s, Institute of Technology- Banaras Hindu University - IT-BHU and Indian School of Mines- ISM-Dhanbad is done through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The exam is conducted by the IIT-. Any one of the IIT may conduct the examination in a given year, as directed by the IIT Board. These institutions offer courses in a number of engineering,technological and scientific disciplines leading to B. Tech. – Bachelor of Technology, B. Pharm. – Bachelor of Pharmacy and B. Des. – Bachelor of Design. Some of these Institutes offers M.Sc. – Master of Science Integrated courses in pure and applied sciences and M.Tech. – Master of Technology. Some IITs offer Dual Degree M.Tech. programmes wherein both B.Tech. & M.Tech. Degrees are awarded. The entrance examination is popular as IIT-JEE.


Eligibility Criteria

Qualifying Examination: Candidates applying for IIT-JEE should have either completed or must be appearing in any one of the following examinations in the year of the IIT-JEE exam:-
  • The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board.
  • Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
  • Final Examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • General Certificate Education ( GCE ) Examination ( London / Cambridge / Sri Lanka ) at the Advanced (A) level.
  • High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University.
  • Any Public School / Board / University Examination in India or in any foreign country recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to 10+2 system.
  • H.S.C. Vocational Examination.
  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects.
  • 3 or 4-year Diploma recognized by AICTE – All India Council for Technical for Technical Education or a State Board of Technical Education.

In case the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.

Eligibility Criteria for Candidates appearing in qualifying examination

  • The candidates belonging to general category must secure a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in Qualifying Examination. Candidates belonging to SC, ST and PD categories must secure a minimum of 55% in aggregate in the Qualifying Examination. If any Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of counselling.
  • With effect from 2006, a candidate is allowed only two attempts to appear in JEE. Furthermore, he/she is allowed to write JEE only in the year in which he/she passes the qualifying examination and/or in the following year.
  • Candidates, who join any of the IITs, IT-BHU Varanasi and ISM Dhanbad through JEE, will not be permitted to appear in JEE in future.

Exception: Candidates, who have passed their Qualifying Examination in 2005 or earlier, are permitted to appear in JEE-2006, as a last chance, irrespective of the marks secured in the Qualifying Examination, or the number of earlier attempts at JEE, subject to their satisfying age limit This exception is also applicable to those candidates who are currently registered in any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISM, Dhanbad.

Date of Birth: No minimum age is required to appear in IIT-JEE. Upper age limit is 25 years for general category candidates, which is relaxable upto 5 years in case of reserved category candidates.

Special Requirements for Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Courses: Candidates opting for Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery courses must be free from colour blindness.

Women Candidates for Mining Courses : Section 46 (1) of the Mines Act, 1952 states that “No woman shall, notwithstanding anything contained in any other law, be employed (a) in any part of a mine which is below ground, (b) in any mine above ground except between the hours 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.”. Women candidates are not admitted to Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Engineering at ISM Dhanbad, whereas the corresponding programmes at IIT Kharagpur and IT-BHU, Varanasi have no such restriction.

Reservation of Seats


SC/ST Candidates: 15% and 7.5% seats in each course are reserved for SC and ST category candidates. Candidates belonging to SC/ST categories are admitted on the basis of relaxed criteria (compared to GE / DS category candidates). In case all the reserved seats are not filled, a further relaxation is made in the admission criteria and a limited number of candidates are admitted to a Preparatory Course of one-year duration. This course attempts to prepare the students in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. On successful completion of preparatory course, the students are offered direct admission to the undergraduate programmes in next year against the unfilled reserved seats for previous year.

Persons with Disabilities (PD): 3% seats are reserved for PD (including leprosy-cured) candidates, as specified by the Government of India, who are otherwise fit to pursue the course and qualify JEE with relaxed norms relevant to this category. For any category of disability (viz., locomotor, visual, speech and hearing), benefit would be given to those candidates who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment in relation to a body part / system / extremity / extremities / whole body, etc. The candidates in this category will be required to be certified by a Medical Board. The Medical Board will decide the following:

Whether the candidate qualifies for the benefits under this category, and If the disability is likely to interfere in his/her studies. The Medical Board duly constituted for this purpose shall meet at the time of counselling at the designated IIT for the counselling of PD category candidates.

Preferential Allotment of Seats: Two seats are available for preferential allotment of courses in each Institute for children of defence or paramilitary personnel killed or permanently disabled in action during war or peacetime operations (DS category). To avail this preferential allotment, candidates must qualify in the General Category.


Pattern of Examination


Question Papers for IIT-JEE:The examination consists of three separate papers in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, each of two hours duration. The questions in these papers are objective type, which are to be answered on the specially designed machine-gradable sheet using HB pencils only. There is negative marking for Incorrect answers

Language of Question Papers for IIT-JEE: A candidate can opt for Question Papers either in English or in Hindi.

Use of calculators and log tables is NOT permitted in IIT-JEE.

Aptitude Test for B. Arch. and B. Des. Courses: The candidates called for counselling and desirous of joining the B. Arch. and B. Des. Courses are required to qualify in an Aptitude Test conducted at each counselling Institute. The test is of two hours duration Candidates who fail in the Aptitude Test are not eligible for admission to either B. Arch. or B. Des. Courses.

JOINT ENTRANCE EXAMINATION 2007 (JEE - 2007)


For admission to undergraduate courses at the above-mentioned seven Indian Institutes of Technology, IT-BHU, Varanasi and Indian School of Mines. Dhanbad.
Examination Schedule

April 8, 2007 (Sunday) : 09.00 -12.00 hrs Paper -1
: 14.00-17.00 hrs Paper-2

Paper-1 and Paper-2 will each have three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Both the papers will be of objective type, designed to test comprehension and analytical ability of candidates.


Eligibility:


A candidate can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years. Candidates who have passed (10+2) or equivalent qualifying examination in 2006 or will be appearing in 2007, and secure at least 60% (55% for SC/ST and PD) marks in aggregate in their respective Board Examination are eligible. In ease the respective Board awards letter-grades without providing norms for converting them to equivalent percentage marks, the norms decided by the Joint Implementation Committee. JEE-2007 shall be final.

Candidates who have accepted admission by payment of full fees at any of the IITs, IT- BHU, Varanasi, and ISM, Dhanbad through JEE willNOT be permitted to appear in JEE-2007.

Only those candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 1, 1982 are eligible for JEE-2007. However, in case of SC/ST, PD candidates, the upper age limit is relaxed by five years, i.e. SC/ST and PD candidates born on or after October 1, 1977 are eligible.

Syllabus for this examination is available on the websites or all IITs, and will also be given in the Information Brochure of JEE - 2007.
